How a replicate’s seed depends on the trial it belongs to.

Variants

Paired

Common random numbers: replicate j uses the same seed in every trial, so two configurations are compared under identical randomness.

This is the cheap-to-offer variance reduction the RL protocol calls out. The seed does not depend on the trial number.

Independent

Every replicate of every trial draws a fresh seed: the trial number is folded into the derivation as well.
